Make your bed after waking up

Make your bed after waking up — either right away, or after freshening up. This act will discipline you.

For one, you are starting your day by fulfilling your duty and responsibility despite the heavy sleep inertia you experience after waking up. Therefore, making your bed will contribute to your practice of cultivating a habit of fulfilling your responsibilities.

For another, making your bed is an accomplishment of a task. When you start you day with a sense of accomplishment, it is a tow to complete the rest of your tasks. To most people, this makes a difference.

A third benefit is the psychological benefit of a tidy bed and bedroom. Untidiness or clutter actively distracts most people while tidiness and order forms a pleasing visual aesthetics that everybody's brain loves. This can result in a sense of focus and clarity.

To see if making your bed makes a difference to you with the last two points, conduct an experiment yourself. For at least a month, make your bed after waking up. After a month, skip making your bed and continue the day's routine. See if there is a difference in your attitude. If so, you have three reasons to make your bed after waking up. If not, you still have a reason — the first one.

So start making your bed and transform it into a ritual.
